There are two separate 18-hole golf courses here, along with a driving range, a practice putting area, and a practice chipping area. Golf clubs and balls are available for rental and purchase. Golf carts are included in the course fee. The place is well maintained, very clean, and the staff are cordial and friendly. There is abundant wildlife (many different birds, including golden and bald eagles, cardinals, robins, bluejays, hawks, finches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, sparrows, owls, cranes, ducks, geese, and others, plus deer, squirrels, turtles, otters/beavers in water, foxes, rabbits, butterflies, etc) and the course design offers privacy from other groups golfing. The holes are challenging and the scenery is spectacular, so much that I highly recommend coming here in spring to enjoy the fresh scents and appearances of the blossoming flowers and trees and in autumn to see the marvelously different colors of leaves in the context of the overall landscape and wildlife. This is an awesome golf course cultivated from and blended into nature, rather than an artificial golf course that bulldozes over and eradicates nature. Very refreshing! I had a great time here and definitely look forward to visiting again.

The course was in decent condition, but the overall experience was mixed. The pro shop staff came across as unfriendly, which detracted from the visit. On a positive note, the restaurant staff was friendly and welcoming, though the food quality was disappointing. The facility has potential, but unfortunately, the experience with staff makes it unlikely I’ll return.

Showed up 5 minutes early to check into my tee time and stood in line for 5 minutes while desk attendant was talking to someone about a friend of theirs by the time he was ready to serve me he said I was too late and he couldn’t fit me in to my scheduled tee time. Worst golf club/course customer service I have ever had.

I visited Newport News Golf Club recently to hit a few balls at the range. I've previously taken golf lessons here. Their instructors are great and helped me with my swing. The clubhouse is clean and well maintained as is the rest of the course. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Some of the golfers are not as friendly. Prices are very affordable. Overall this seems to be a popular course for good reason.

I cannot in good conscience recommend Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run. From the start, our experience was tainted by extremely unprofessional and frankly unacceptable behavior from staff.
Not only were we stopped at our scheduled tee time and forced to have our receipts checked, but we were also accused of being undercharged and told we had to go back inside to pay more. This was after we had already chosen this course specifically because of its lower price point, as one of our players was only on their second round of golf ever. Instead of welcoming and accommodating newer players, the staff’s behavior was belittling, discouraging, and in some instances blatantly sexist—completely out of line in any professional setting, let alone a customer-facing business.
The whole ordeal was embarrassing, unnecessary, and a clear demonstration that this facility values squeezing a few extra dollars over basic respect and decency. Lesson learned: sometimes the “cheaper” option comes at too high a cost.
We will not be returning to Deer Run. If you want to play somewhere where you are treated like a valued guest, I strongly recommend Golden Horseshoe. The staff there are consistently professional, welcoming, and respectful, and the course is beautifully maintained. As the saying goes, “you get what you pay for”—and it’s absolutely worth paying a little extra to be treated with the dignity every golfer deserves.
