This is a course I'd been looking forward to playing for a long time. It's a special place to me, where my dad taught me to play back in 1971 when it was the Crucible Management Club. The last time I had played it was sometime in 1974 before I headed off to boot camp and a 20-year Naval aviation career.
Fast forward to Friday, September 23rd 2022 - a "journey back in time" round on a beautiful sunny morning, the final stop before driving home to East Liverpool after 11 days on the road from Washington State.
It was a pleasure meeting Jill, the very pretty and kind lady in the clubhouse; she was very tolerant of my blabbing on and on about the memories I had and how special this course was to me. :-)
Anyway, on to the course...WOW. Lemme tell ya, I was SO overjoyed at how well the course was being cared for! I've played 210 different courses in the past 3 years since retiring from the National Park Service (and picking up the clubs again after 23 years) and Deer Trails' tee boxes, fairways and greens are every blade of grass as beautiful as some of the more high-end courses I've played! What a hidden gem! I don't remember it ever looking as good back in the day. And the fact that it's undeveloped makes it even more special. Quiet. Serene. Just beautiful.
I've attached photos, and if management would like to use them on the website, please feel free.
Thank you again, Jill. And thank all involved in keeping Deer Trails aka Crucible Management Club:-) beautiful!!
I'll definitely be back! Hopefully, you'll have some golf balls with the Deer Trails logo on it!

Deer Trails has become my favorite spot to play nine holes. You can’t beat the price, the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, and the greens are outstanding. The bunkers could definitely use some love, but the relaxed atmosphere, well maintained fairways, and beautiful greens more than makes up for it. The GPS carts are great as well. Ignore the previous complaints about the carts shutting down near the greens…after a couple of holes, it’s pretty easy to figure out. This place is also great for kids and new players as well. They make everyone feel welcomed, no matter the skill level.
