Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course is one of best golf courses in the Capital Region. Definitely an overlooked hidden gem! The course is challenging and yet fair due to it's length and it's design. The course is kept in very good shape. It is easy to make tee times and course rates are some of the best in the area. Local knowledge is definitely applicable on the course as ball placement and distance are key on many holes. The course was designed by famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones during the Great Depression. The use of the natural area, large greens, and bunker placement make it a classic course. A must play if you live in the area.

Everyone was really polite and helpful. It was a quiet day when I was down here. The warden checked in with us several times to make sure we didn't need anything. It seems like everyone is pretty good about repairing or filling their pitch marks. The driving range is in the middle of the course. So you have to either hike in or get a cart. You bring and chase your own balls on their driving range. But (at least when I was there) it's free to use.

I was traveling for work in Upstate NY and I decided to pack my clubs. One of my meetings in Saratoga got canceled so I had nothing to do in the afternoon before I needed to be in Rochester the following day. Went to their online reservation system and noticed a mostly open afternoon, but unfortunately they don't let you book singles online (from my experience some courses do, and some don't and I get why some don't). I decided to make the trip anyway since it wasn't too far out of the way and I was greeted by a nice gentleman in the parking lot who said I could play as a single. The price was pretty cheap and included a cart. The gentleman outside led me to the first tee and gave me a quick overview of the course. It was such a nice bonus to have a very warm and friendly starter and cashier at a public course. Most of the ones where I live are cranky old men who'd rather be anywhere else. The course itself has some very unique and varied holes. It wasn't overly busy that day and a group that I caught up to let me play through around hole 5. The holes are pretty open, the fairways were great, the rough was pretty short, and the greens were well kept. I'm by no means a great golfer, but I shot a 91 and only lost 1 ball. It's nice to play courses that don't overly penalize you for a slight mishit. It's not an easy course as it's a fair length, but I wouldn't call it difficult either. Fun and accessible is the best way to describe it. The holes have some cool elevated tee boxes and some that go up hill. Most of the holes are spread out well, although there's a few spots and tee boxes where you might be in the firing range of an errant shot. My only complaint is that some of the cart paths are in REALLY bad shape. You can avoid some of them by driving on the course, but I'm sure some days are cart-path only and that could cause trouble. There are also some bad paths between holes on hills that are unavoidable. I definitively got a little nervous in a few spots. Some paths look like they were renovated recently so I'm hoping that will extend to the rest of the course. Seems the course was maybe in financial trouble years ago but hopefully with the golf boom, they're doing better now. My local munis have been swimming in money the last few years. Overall it was a 5 star experience and I'm glad I went. I will hopefully have time to play again he next time I'm in the region. Kudos to the staff and the grounds crew for keeping up such a nice course. Bonus points for being super nice as well.
